Asthma is one of the most widely spread chronic
diseases in California,
with more than five million patients in our state. It leads to thousands of hospital visits each
year and, tragically, hundreds of deaths.
Asthma is also the most common illness in children, and it can cause
very serious problems.
However, with proper medical care and precautions,
asthma can be controlled. We can also
combat the disease by encouraging our family and friends to quit smoking and by
promoting healthy habits in general.
Asthma Awareness Month is a great time to renew our focus on managing
asthma and to encourage those suffering from the disease to visit their health
professionals.
These precautionary measures allow many people with
asthma to live happier and healthier lives.
All across our state, health care professionals, environmental groups
and government leaders are taking action to fight the causes of asthma and
bring awareness on how to avoid and treat it.
In 2005, I also launched the Breathe Easier campaign, which educates
Californians about the harmful health effects of smog and urges people to take
high polluting cars off the road. By
working together, we can reduce the impact asthma has in our Golden State.
NOW,
THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim May 2008, as
"Asthma Awareness Month."

IN WITNESS
WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand
and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 8th day
of May 2008.
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
Governor of California
