California
is home to more senior citizens than any other state in the nation, and the
state's fastest growing age group is eight-five years and up. The number of older Californians is rising,
and as baby boomers begin to turn sixty-five years old, the number is expected
to grow even quicker.
Today's
senior citizens are part of a remarkable generation whose hard work helped create
California's legacy as the Golden State.
And due to advancements in medicine and
technology, today's older Californians promise to be among the most active and
engaged in our history. Senior citizens
may retire from their jobs, but by serving as volunteers, mentors and
role-models, they continue to contribute much to our state.
As seniors
continue to age, some may need assistance from the younger generation. I encourage all younger Californians to
recognize that it is our responsibility and privilege to care for those who
once cared for us. I extend my sincerest
appreciation to the family members, health care professionals and other
caregivers who are donating their time and talents to caring for our
seniors. Your selfless efforts are
making our state stronger.
NOW,
THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim May 2008, as
"Older Californians Month."

IN WITNESS
WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand
and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 21st
day of April 2008.
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
Governor of California
