In California,
gambling creates numerous jobs and provides revenues for our state and local
governments, all while providing entertainment to many people. However, while most patrons gamble
responsibly, an estimated 3.7 percent of the adult population experience
significant problems related to gambling. These problems can create significant financial
difficulties, as well as lead to serious physical and emotional
challenges.
It is important to acknowledge the severe impacts
of problem gambling, which is why California
joins several other states in recognizing the second week of March as Problem
Gambling Awareness Week. Problem
gambling affects people from all segments of society and can negatively
influence the gambler's family, friends, employer and community.
Government and non-profit agencies are
working together to address this serious issue.
Individuals with gambling problems and those who care about them are
encouraged to call 1-800-GAMBLER or
contact organizations such as Gamblers Anonymous and Gam-Anon that are ready to
offer help.
By raising awareness of the warning signs of
problem gambling and by promoting the outstanding help that is available, we
can bring aid to those in need and strike a significant blow against problem
gambling in California.
NOW,
THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim March 9-15,
2008, as "California Problem Gambling Awareness Week."

IN WITNESS
WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and
caused the Great Seal of the State of California
to be affixed this 5th day of March 2008.
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
Governor of California
