Knowledgeable consumers and a fair and
competitive marketplace are the cornerstones of California's economy. If Californians take reasonable precautions
while conducting their purchases, they reduce the risk of falling victim to fraud
or identity theft. One of the surest
security measures consumers can take is to consistently monitor their personal
financial accounts and report any suspicious activity. Keeping an accurate record of financial
transactions and taking great care to safeguard personal information such as
social security and bank account numbers are important steps to becoming an
informed consumer.
While our residents can take action to
prevent deception or identity theft, they also can count on our state government
to have additional protections in place against fraudulent business practices
and identity theft. From thorough
licensing programs to partnering with local consumer protection organizations,
our state government is working hard to empower Californians and promote
ethical business practices.
This week, I am reinforcing California's strong commitment to educating
consumers about their rights, responsibilities and the resources that are
available to them. Fraudulent business
practices rob our marketplace of its integrity and strip consumers of their
confidence to purchase goods and services.
By making the effort to become informed consumers, Californians can help
keep our economy strong.
NOW,
THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim March 2-8,
2008, as "California Consumer Protection Week."

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 27th day of February 2008.
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
Governor of California
