January 2008, as “Radon Action Month”
PROCLAMATION
by the
Governor of the State of California

Most of my movies are action movies, a genre I love because of all the exhilarating activity that happens from the first frames to the last.  January in California is also a time for great effort and activity, because we are observing Radon Action Month.  While I battled fictional villains in my movies, radon is a real-life killer and the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.  This naturally-occurring radioactive gas can seep into our homes from surrounding rock and soil.  And since radon is odorless, tasteless and colorless, the only way to know if it's there is to test for it.

While most California counties have a low to moderate risk of having elevated indoor radon levels, there are areas scattered throughout twenty-two counties with a high risk.  This translates into an estimated 240,000 Californians who are exposed to dangerous levels of radon.

During this month of action, I urge Californians to have their homes tested, to use radon-resistant construction techniques and to repair homes found to have unsafe levels of indoor radon.  And more information about the dangers of radon can be found by visiting the California Department of Public Health's website here or by calling (916) 449-5674.  California is committed to our residents' health and well-being, and now is the time to take action against radon and its potentially lethal consequences.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim January 2008, as "Radon Action Month."

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 3rd day of January 2008.

Arnold Schwarzenegger
GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA

Debra Bowen
