It saddens me to hear about the terrible effects that methamphetamine abuse has on our state. Consider these well-documented effects: irritability, fatigue, headaches, confusion, violent rages, depression, terrifying delusions, increased risk to HIV/AIDS, hideous tooth decay, suicidal thoughts and death. Also known through such street terms as chalk, crank and speed, methamphetamine produces a long term drain of life that destroys bodies, families and communities.
Methamphetamine abuse can enslave users to a lifetime of pain, as well as rob them of their talents and abilities. According to the latest data available, more than 2 million Californians used methamphetamine at least once in their lifetime. This is a tragic statistic, but we have the power to encourage abusers to seek treatment, apprehend those who produce it and warn those who may be tempted to use it.
California has taken action to raise awareness about the dangers of methamphetamine abuse. This includes establishing the California Methamphetamine Initiative, a $10 million public education campaign. Combined with the dedicated efforts of individuals, government agencies and nonprofit organizations, I know we can continue to make a significant impact in decreasing the number of abusers.
I want all Californians who are suffering from this terrible addiction and their families to know that help is available. You, a friend or a loved one can call the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs’ Resource Center at (800) 879-2772 or (800) 662-4357. More information also can be found at the department’s website (http://www.adp.cahwnet.gov). By taking the first step toward seeking help, you are putting yourself onto a path of recovery that can free you from the chains of addiction.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim November 28, 2007, as “Methamphetamine Awareness Day.”

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 20th day of November 2007.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA

Debra Bowen
SECRETARY OF STATE
