October 20, 2006, as “Filipino American Veterans Day”
PROCLAMATION
by the
Governor of the State of California
The triumph of freedom and democracy in World War II would not have been possible without the crucial contributions of countless individuals. On Filipino American Veterans Day, I join my fellow Californians in paying tribute to the brave Filipino soldiers who fought alongside the United States under the command of General Douglas MacArthur.
The now-iconic image of General MacArthur wading ashore to the Philippines on October 20, 1944, and the subsequent liberation of the islands were made possible by the valiant efforts of Filipino soldiers and sailors throughout the Pacific Theater of Operation in World War II. Their devotion to their homeland and their support to the United States and the cause of freedom will forever be remembered with gratitude by the people of California.
As time passes, fewer of these Filipino soldiers will be able to attest to their historical and courageous contributions to our nation. To that end, I urge all Californians today to never forget their sacrifices. They gave much to ensure that all can enjoy the blessings of freedom. They have our deepest appreciation and respect.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim October 20, 2006, as “Filipino American Veterans Day.”
IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have here unto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 18th day of October 2006.
