Governor Schwarzenegger Proclaims December 1 "California AIDS Day"
PROCLAMATION
by the
Governor of the State of California
At the end of 2003, an estimated 40 million people, including 2.1 million children worldwide, were living with HIV, the precursor to AIDS. This year alone, nearly 4.9 million people became newly infected with the virus, which strikes men, women and children on all continents around the world. The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to be one of the most serious public health threats facing California and has claimed the lives of more than 80,000 Californians. December 1, 2005, marks the 18th anniversary of World AIDS Day, an international day of solidarity to support HIV/AIDS intervention programs. We express our gratitude for those who work tirelessly to advance prevention, care and treatment, and we join them in raising public awareness to combat this insidious disease. NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim December 1, 2005, as "California AIDS Day."
IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have here unto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this the thirtieth day of November 2005. /s/ Arnold Schwarzenegger Governor of California
