Radon is a radioactive gas that can seep into
homes from surrounding rock and soil.
You can't see it, taste it or smell it, but unsafe levels of radon pose
a serious health risk to you and your loved ones. Radon exposure is the second leading cause of
lung cancer in the United States, and claims 20,000 lives each year in our
country.
Fortunately, there are affordable and easy to
use radon testing kits that can help you determine if there are dangerous
levels of radon in your home. If unsafe levels
are found, there are many options available that can drastically reduce your
exposure to radon.
I hope that all Californians use this month
to better educate themselves about radon, to get their homes tested and to take
the necessary action to protect themselves and their families from this
cancer-causing gas. For more
information, please visit the California Department of Public Health's website
at www.cdph.ca.gov or call (916) 449-5674.
NOW,
THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER,
Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim January 2009, as "Radon
Action Month."
IN WITNESS
WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand
and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 6th day
of January 2009.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA
