Mentoring a young person can be one of the most
meaningful acts of service. Not only do
mentors help children gain confidence, but national research shows that kids in
these types of positive relationships do better in school and are less likely
to begin using drugs or alcohol.
I was fortunate to have many great mentors in my life,
and it is my hope that the people of our state will take the opportunity to
share their time and talents with young Californians. Our state is full of fantastic children who
have the ability to achieve greatness, and dedicated mentors can help them
unlock their potential.
My gratitude goes to the many wonderful Californians
who are devoted to seeing our youth succeed in life. Mentoring Month is a special time to
recognize their deeds and is also a time to encourage more people to become
mentors. Whether at a school, on a
ballfield or in a host of other settings, the opportunities to mentor are
endless. To find out about mentoring in
your area, please visit CaliforniaVolunteers.org.
NOW,
THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER,
Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim January 2009, as "California
Mentoring Month."
IN WITNESS
WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand
and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 6th day
of January 2009.
