Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among California women, and one
in every nine females in our state will be diagnosed with this disease during
her lifetime. However, ninety-eight
percent of those living with cancer have a greater chance of survival when it
is detected early. With improved access
to treatment and regular screenings, we are making great strides in the fight
against this terrible disease, and our efforts have helped reduce the breast
cancer mortality rate in our state by more than twenty-seven percent since 1988.
California offers a variety of programs to women who are in need
of care. One is the California
Department of Public Health's Cancer
Detection Programs: Every Woman Counts, which provides medically
underserved women with free breast and cervical cancer early detection,
education and prevention services. The
California Department of Health Care Services' Breast and Cervical Cancer
Treatment Program is another resource, offering care and treatment to females diagnosed
with cancer.
During the month of October, many organizations and
community groups will offer public education and awareness events. I urge all Californians to take action
against breast cancer and ensure that all women receive proper screenings and
treatment.
NOW,
THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim October 2008,
as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month."

IN WITNESS
WHEREOF I
have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California
to be affixed this 7th day of October 2008.
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
Governor of California
