Governor Schwarzenegger Appoints Ila Mettee-McCutchon District IV Monterey County Supervisor

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced the appointment of Ila Mettee-McCutchon to the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, representing District IV.

"Ila's experience in local government and involvement in her community make her the perfect fit for this job," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "She has proven to be a dedicated public servant as the mayor of Marina and I am confident she will continue to do a great job in serving the people of Monterey County."

Mettee-McCutchon has served as mayor of Marina since 2002 and was elected to the Marina City Council in 1998. She has also served as a military intelligence officer with the U.S. Army since 1971. In this capacity, Mettee-McCutchon has commanded U.S. Army units at the company, battalion and brigade levels. In addition to assignments in the United States, she served as chief of the Joint Intelligence Center in Panama from 1987 to 1989 and on the International Military Staff of NATO in Brussels, Belgium from 1992 to 1994.

Mettee-McCutchon is a member of the Fort Ord Reuse Authority (FORA) Board of Directors and Executive Committee and is past chair of FORA. She is also a community advisor to the Coalition of Homeless Services Providers, member of the League of California Cities' Housing and Economic Development Policy Committee, vice chair of the Monterey Bay Division of the League and a past member of the board of directors for the Girl Scouts of Monterey Bay.

"I am excited for the opportunity to continue serving the people of Monterey County in this new role on the board of supervisors. As an active member of the community and a representative in local government, I look forward to applying my past experience to addressing the important issues facing our county as supervisor," said Ila Mettee-McCutchon. "I plan on serving with the same integrity that former Supervisor Jerry Smith did."

Mettee-McCutchon, 62, of Marina, earned a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Arts from Auburn University. She also attended the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College, an executive level school for senior military officers. The compensation for this position is $117,900. Mettee-McCutchon is a Republican.

The Monterey County Board of Supervisors is the elected body representing the people of Monterey County. There are five districts that elect the five-person board of supervisors. District IV represents the cities of Del Rey Oaks, Marina, Sand City, Seaside and southwest Salinas.  Each supervisorial seat represents about 84,000 residents.

Pursuant to California Government Code § 25060, the Governor has the appointing authority to fill a vacancy on a county board of supervisors until the next general election cycle. The appointee of the Governor must be an elector of the district which he/she will represent for 30 days immediately preceding the appointment and reside in the district during his/her incumbency. The appointee will hold office until the election and qualification of a successor with such election to be held at the next general election unless the term would expire in January following such general election. When a vacancy continues from the failure of the person elected to succeed the appointee to qualify for office, the Governor's appointee holds for the unexpired term.

The District IV seat of the Monterey County Board of Supervisors currently has a vacancy due to the passing of Supervisor Jerry Smith on November 25, 2007.
