Governor Schwarzenegger:
Hi, this is Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with another
California Report.
California's
water future got a big shot in the arm this week during a highly productive
meeting in my office with Senator Dianne Feinstein, legislative leaders and key
water stakeholders.
Nothing is more important to California and its economy than making sure
that we have all the water we need now and far into the future.
But with last year's drought, court-ordered reductions in
deliveries and our outdated infrastructure, we are facing a serious water
crisis.
Water districts are rationing supplies, farmers are letting
fields sit idle and some of our reservoirs are less than half full.
And the seriousness of this issue was just reinforced with a
new study that said that Colorado River reservoirs that serve much of Southern California could dry up by the year 2021 based
on current climate and use trends.
There is no more time to waste. We have to plan and build
for California's
future right now.
We came close to reaching an agreement in the legislature last
year that could have given California
the additional water storage capacity it desperately needs.
But a few final sticking points made us unable to close the
deal.
A state of 37 million people cannot thrive on a water system
designed and built for a population half that number.
And because these projects take years to build our
population could be 50 million by the time these projects are complete. So we
would be crazy not to take action to solve this problem right now.
And that's why we met for nearly three hours in my office on
Thursday and everyone at the table was committed to getting this done. My staff
will continue to push forward and we will keep meeting until we reach an
agreement.
The legislature must put a water plan on the ballot this
coming November.
And I know that with Senator Feinstein, myself and Democrats
and Republicans campaigning up and down the state, we will succeed.
We will make sure California
has all the water it needs to keep our environment and our economy healthy.

Schwarzenegger con otro informe de California.
El futuro de agua en California recibió un
gran empuje esta semana, durante una reunión muy productiva con la Senadora
Dianne Feinstein, lideres legislativos y grupos interesados claves.
Nada es más importante para California y
su economía al asegurar que tengamos toda la agua que necesitamos ahora y para
el futuro.
Pero con la sequía del año pasado, la
reducción al reparto del agua que fue ordenada por las cortes, y nuestra

casi tres horas en mi oficina y todos aquellos que estaban presentes, están
comprometidos en completarlo.

adelante y continuaremos reuniéndonos hasta que lleguemos a un acuerdo.
La legislatura debe de poner un plan de
agua en la balota de este noviembre.
Y se que juntos en campaña por todo el
Estado, con la Senadora Feinstein, Demócratas y Republicanos, seremos exitosos.
Aseguraremos que California tenga toda la
agua que necesita para mantener saludable nuestro medioambiente y nuestra
economía.
