Governor Schwarzenegger Appoints Nine Members of the Medical Board of California

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced the appointment of Steve Alexander, Cesar Aristeiguieta, Stephen Corday, Shelton Duruisseau, Martin Greenberg, Mary Moran, and Ronald Wender to the Medical Board of California, Division of Medical Quality, and Hedy Chang and Laurie Gregg to the Medical Board of California, Division of Licensing. "The assurance of safe and reliable medical services is a vital component of California's quality of life," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "Each of these highly qualified individuals shares my commitment to public health and will work diligently to provide careful oversight of California's health care professionals." Steve Alexander is the president of the Steve Alexander Group, a strategic communications and public affairs company. Prior to his career in public affairs, he was a licensed marriage and family therapist. He holds a Master of Arts degree from U.S. International University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Merrimack College. Alexander, 53, is a resident of La Jolla. He is a Democrat. Cesar Aristeiguieta is a board-certified emergency physician and medical director of the Los Angeles County Paramedic Training Institute. He also serves as medical director of the emergency department at Hi-Desert Hospital in Joshua Tree. In addition, Aristeiguieta holds a faculty appointment as a clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Southern California. He received a Medical Doctorate from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Science from California State University, Bakersfield. Aristeiguieta, 42, is a resident of Santa Monica. He is a Republican. Stephen Corday is an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles Center for Health Sciences and attending physician and research scientist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Since 1990, he has served as team physician to the Los Angeles and Oakland Raiders Football Organization. He holds a Medical Doctorate and Bachelor of Science from Stanford University. Corday, 56, is a resident of Los Angeles. He is a Republican. Shelton Duruisseau is the senior associate director of the University of California, Davis Health System and serves as its executive director for external affairs. His responsibilities encompass several divisions, including professional services, information & communication services, facilities design & construction, and human resources. He holds a Doctorate of Philosophy and Master of Science from the University of Nebraska, and a Bachelor of Science from Grambling State University. Duruisseau, 60, is a resident of Sacramento. He is a Democrat. Martin Greenberg is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Sacramento. He is also a member of the clinical faculty at the University of California, Davis Medical Center, where he teaches Laws, Ethics, and the Standard of Care to post-doctoral psychology fellows. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Education, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Texas. Greenberg, 54, is a resident of Sacramento. He is a Republican. Mary Moran operates a private medical practice in Woodside. She has also been a member of the voluntary clinical faculty at Stanford University. She holds a Medical Doctorate and Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan. Moran, 41, is a resident of Woodside. She is a Republican. Ronald Wender is the senior chief of the Department of Anesthesia at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center. Additionally, he is a co-managing partner of the General Anesthesia Specialists Partnership, an anesthesia group with approximately 100 members. He holds a Medical Doctorate from Tulane University School of Medicine and Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University. Wender, 57, is a resident of Encino. He is registered Democrat. Hedy Chang is a city council member of the City of Morgan Hill. She is also an appointee to the Morgan Hill Medical Foundation, tasked with rebuilding city medical services by recruiting doctors and retaining a hospital site. She holds a Master of Science from the University of Illinois and a Bachelor of Science from National Taiwan University. Chang, 57, is a resident of Morgan Hill. She is a Republican. Laurie Gregg operates a private medical practice in Sacramento. She currently serves as the vice-president of the Northern California Obstetrician and Gynecological Society. She holds a Medical Doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Bachelor of Arts from Pomona College. Gregg, 40, is a resident of Sacramento. She is a Democrat. These positions require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. The Medical Board of California assures the initial and continued competence of the health professions and occupations under its jurisdiction through licensure, investigation of complaints against its licensees, and discipline of those found guilty of violations of the law or regulations. Within the Board are two divisions, the Division of Medical Quality (DMQ) and the Division of Licensing (DL). The DMQ is responsible for the enforcement of the disciplinary and criminal provisions of the Medical Practice Act. The DMQ is given the authority to suspend, revoke or otherwise limit physician licenses. The DL is responsible for approving undergraduate and graduate medical education programs as well as approving clinical clerkship and special programs and hospitals for such programs. The DL develops and administers the physician's and surgeon's licensure examination and issues licenses and certificates.
