Funding Will Further California’s Efforts to Cultivate Growth in the Green Industry

Newly named California Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Agency Victoria Bradshaw issued a statement today after the U.S. Department of Labor announced that California has been awarded over $1.1 million for green job training and $1.25 million for the Employment Development Department’s Labor Market Information Division (LMID). Funding comes from President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act).

“The Governor and I have made it clear - jobs of the future are here in California,” said Secretary Bradshaw. “These funds will help to train and re-train hard-working Californians for jobs in the green industry. I’m committed to allocating this funding to programs that will get people into classes as swiftly as responsibly possible.”

State Labor Market Information (LMI) Improvement grants will support the analysis of labor market data to assess economic activity in energy efficiency and renewable energy industries and identify occupations and skill requirements within those industries.  These grants invest in state and consortium models designed to collect, analyze, and disseminate labor market information, and enhance the labor exchange infrastructure for careers within energy efficiency and renewable energy fields. State Workforce Agencies will use this information as the foundation on which to build and implement effective workforce development strategies. Multiple State Workforce Agencies partnering as a consortium will gather information that may have a regional, multi‐State, or national impact.

The Green Capacity Building grant competition is designed to build the green training capacity of current Department of Labor (DOL) grantees. Through these grants, ETA will help individuals acquire the skills needed to enter and advance in green industries and occupations by building the capacity of active DOL‐funded training programs. Grantees will provide education and training in the skills and competencies that are needed in green industries and occupations, and may bolster the capacity of their training programs through staff professional development, curriculum development, partnership development, the purchase of equipment, and where necessary, the hiring of additional staff.
